Title: satellite tv
Post by: keithtx on November 10, 2014, 09:51:06 AM
I have a televes box. Need to re tune as lost all channels. Which satellites do I tune too? Nilesat? Astra 2A? Tried the latter but no channels. What channels can I expect ie movie channels? Any help much appreciated.

Thanks!

We have two dishes. I think one pointed at nilesat and the other at Astra but not sure really. Never properly understood the system. Any suggestions as to what I should do now would be much appreciated.

Cheers >:(

Is sky still signalling and can it be picked up by altering the transponder code? I am on 12051V  27500 as recommended by Zapparocks 12 months ago. I am now getting a no signal message, anything would be an improvement.

The default transponder frequency on a sky box does nothing for individual channel reception.
The default transponder frequency simply tells the sky box what frequency to download the channel list from when the box is first powered up.
Once the channel list is downloaded, and the box is up and running, the any manually input default transponder frequency is then pretty much ignored, as the box will use whichever of the 100+ frequencies it needs to use for the chanel you have selected to watch.
AS proven by the fact that 12051 only carries about a dozen channels, most of them "Turner" channels like CNN, TCM...

I think the problem is your dish size and possibly your LNB, I have a 1.8 M dish and I haven't lost any Sky channels, apart from the obvious, BBC and ITV, which was lost a few months ago. However when 2G goes into service, expected to be Feb 2015, it remains to be seen, there is a lot of speculation as to what will happen then.

Correctly installed 1.2 or even 1.1 mtr will pick up all the pan euro FTA channels (astra 2e and F)
For the HD subscription channels (movies particularly) the 1.2 would be better.

The pan euro beams are actually friendlier to us in the canaries than before (yes some channels possible before on smaller 90cm)
Any decent installer over last few years would have gone for the larger dish size (bear in mind needed 135cm before for good reception of the weaker channels)

The OP possibly needs to rescan preferably with a blind scan or similar (some channels now on different freqs - applies to both nilesat and astra. If still nothing then needs a look at as could be diseqc failure, one or both lnb´s ropey etc etc or simply poor installation which is coming to light.

Please ZTV be a bit more specific instead of intimating that everyone will lose more channels and so should get iptv (particularly yours) now when the fix for the OP could be a simple task costing a few euros....he may not want BBC etc (never had it before obviously)

AS for Astra 2G the config of the bird is virtually identical to the other birds 2E & 2F so there may be a slight difference in reception but thats it...slight. May simply require a slight change of scew on the lnb to compensate for the slightly different orbital position although .1 or .2 degrees in geo-orbit position will scarcely be seen on a 1.2 mtr dish.

In conclusion I suggest the OP gets a decent sat installer to stick a meter on and see what the levels are like. BEFORE he lays out any money to anyone

Now that is better....specific information although the OP was only asking regarding FTA so can leave murdochs pension fund out of it (No way I would pay a sky sub and certainly not then extra for HD)
Think you need a cheaper installer though as a 1.2 over here should only cost about 150 installed :D

As with any sat signal it is always subject to the whims of the paying client..ie the service provider. Realistically nobody here would get sport if sky were to put the sports channels on the UK beam - after all there is sufficient capacity however sky say that their encryption is such that nobody without a sky card can receive their channels so hence they can put the channel out on a euro beam despite the restriction being to a UK audience.....guess nobody outside of UK has a sky system (or a c/s) :P

Nobody outside of SES Astra knows for certain what will happen with the bringing into service of 2G. Look at the speculation that went on during the AStra 1n/2E/2F where many people got stung for the 1.8 mtr dishes only to then lose the signal (again most decent installers knew that 1N was temporary and hence the beams were not configured as per 2E/2F and was going to go)

Any half decent installer would take a quick look at the OP system (probably even from the ground) and would advise what was needed and how much....also a decent installer would probably not charge for that if it was local....note the emphasis on DECENT Installer. Also they would do the installation taking into account the sat positions and find the happy medium for the signal from the whole cluster. This was sometimes the case in the past when aligning for 2D/A/B and eurobird....actually forget 2D as that needed a bit bigger than a 1.2 mtr :)

I agree IPTV is A solution but it is not the only solution and regarding costs the OP does not say they want the prime UK channels (BBC etc) or whether they want internet etc so in theory if they just wanted what they had before (more or less) the the worst case scenario would be new 1.2 mtr dish for astra 2 euro beams, new 80cm dish for nilesat total cost installed by decent installer would be less than 300â,¬ (and with a bit of negotiation might even get a cheap new receiver thrown in).  This could be good for 10-15 years life of the birds so would that not be a cheaper solution.

IPTV is not without problems...no satellite based system is either. We are a long way from the UK transmitters and even a 10 mtr dish over here would still drop out with rain.
And as far as Fuerte is concerned we aint getting fibre tomorrow unless we can persuade Branson to move out here instead of Neckar (not sure how you spell the name of his little island)

Hell it would be great if we could all even get vdsl but that is so dependent on distance to exchange/cable quality etc. Its getting better as I originally had 1meg here and they had the cheek to charge 60+ euro /month for it so things are sure a lot better but!!!

12051 has not been used by turner since the summer
I stand corrected - for a change you are correct! :D
But it proves the point even more that changing the default transponder to 12051 does not help individual channel reception, as only ONE channel is on 12051 - SET Asia!

Now that we have a brilliant IPTV service through ZKTV we have a redundant 1.2m dish and quad LNB for sale in Corralejo - any offers? (Buyer collects)
(I know this is not a 'For sale' board but reading this post it just seemed so appropriate to try to help someone looking to try a larger dish and get it off our hands at the same time.)

Sorry got a bit confused with the responses above. What satellites should I tune to and what movie channels can I expect?

Thanks!

Keith, I sent you a message with contact details of someone who can help.

For the moment we need to know where your dishes are pointing. Assuming you have one pointed at Astra 28.2, this ideally needs to be a 1.2m dish, if you stand behind that one and assume it is looking at 12 o'clock, is the other one looking at around 1 o'clock. If so then that will most like be looking at Nilesat 7 degrees West.
I don't know the televes box but you may have the option in the menu to scan for specific satellites. If not, there should be some sort of 'scan all' otherwise known as blindscan.
Try having a look for these hings and see how you go on.
As has been stated above, it could be one of several problems, LNB, Disceqc switch, cabling, the box itself or even the dish alignment.
It is a process of elimination and you need to have at least a rudimentary knowledge and possibly some specialist tools to sort it out.
