Once again I am organising the Fuerteventura Poppy appeal on behalf of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
This year it would be very helpful to me if There is somebody in the Caleta area who could assist me by putting out the collection tins and poppies at various establishments in Caleta/Nuevo area.

Also any bars or shops who would like to assist in the appeal can you please pm me so I can get a collection set to you.

As usual there will be a small non religious gathering on the cliffs at Ajuy at 11am on 11/11. An ex army pasture will be on hand and last post sounded across the Atlantic Ocean. Very moving. - details to follow. A Majoraro lunch is provided in Tuineje and a collection is made and passed to FWM.

FWM & Spike - thanks for what you are doing, we'll certainly be supporting the appeal.
Spike - we'd like to join you again if we may? (Just be careful where you park this year!)

that tell's the reason why there's a poppy day .......methinks !......(nothing we don't already know).....so where does the collection's go ? there's hardly a B.L. club or office here....is there !  ::)  :o

Oh dear, is this the third year FWM has been the official representative for the British Legion here in Fuerteventura and people are still questioning his bona fides

Our meeting at Ajuy attracts a hand full of ex pats. Shame more people don't show more positive input than negative to this important day

I collect all the donations and then bank transfer the money direct to the RBL Poppy Appeal Fund.
Anyone wishing to see my credentials from the RBL Poppy Fund can PM me and I will send them all the relevent paperwork including copies of the receipts for the money paid in each year.

Thanks to those businesses which have been in touch requesting poppies and collecting tins. I hope to have all the boxes distributed by the end of the week. Please bear with me as work commitments are taking up much of my time at the moment. I will update this thread with a complete list of where poppies will be available as soon as I have completed the distribution.

I am still looking for a collection point in Costa Antigua as it used to be Villa Pizza but now that is closed.

that was'nt to painful, was it, question answered, simple, i will contribute if i see a collection point gladly, my dad fought in the last war and was a member of the B.L. for year's, they're a great organisation helping fallen servicemen,s families and one's that got badly wounded, limb-loss etc. best of luck f w m hope it's a bumper collection year here in fuerte.  :)

The answer Bluefox was simple - it was given in the initial posting :-)
Unlike Help For Heroes the RBL will consider requests for help from any ex-serviceman/woman, widows/widowers and dependents - irreverent of when they served.

It WAS bluefox...you are a regular contributor here and all of us know FWM does his Poppy collections every year..did you really think he was a charlatan? Shame on you then, he is a very respected member here.

i asked a simple question and all i wanted was a simple answer, eventually i got one, it's gobshi....'s like you who then make's a big deal out of it, you obviously failed to read my reply to fwm.  >:(

In a way, you can't blame Bluefox for being concerned. As we know, all charities have been guilty of creaming off a big percentage of collections, to line the pockets of their Directors etc..

For example, the recent Ice Bucket Challange:

Total "administration costs" were just under $2 million.
“Other salaries and wages” were $3.6 million, with another half million dollars in “pension plans” and “employee benefits.”
Expenses for non-employee labor were about $4 million, and “travel expenses” exceeded $1.3 million.

So total costs for labor to run the association was around $12.5 million, from revenues received totaling $24 million.

Over 50% of what the ALS Association receives appears to support salaries of people working for the Association, based on these tax returns.

Woe what a load of bolloxs, the collector is a foot soldier for the British Legion, (which he stated in the original post bluefox) it don't need doom and gloom merchants or in the ins and outs of nats naughty little botty to see the guy is doing a non profit deed.

As I previously stated we are more than Appy to have a collection box in the bar @ Chaplins. Hang on wait for the Franco supporters  :P

Appy, I wasn't referring to the Collectors of the money. I'm quite sure that 99% are completely honest. It's what happens to the money once it get to HQ.

I gave to the Ice Bucket Challange, and now realise that only 50% of it went where it was supposed to go.

The other big scam is the Ceramic Poppy thing at Windsor Castle.
£25 to buy. £9 goes to the charities, and then those charities take their own cut out of that.
The poppy costs the manufacturer £2,  and then there are the volunteers, at no expense.
This still leaves a shortfall of £14. With over 100,000 sold, that's a lot of money to be shared out amongst the organisers. Just saying  :-X

Why question where the funds go - isn't it obvious - why cannot we trust people to do the right thing. It is not as if we are donating 'muchos dineros'. I will be donating without any questions.

Yes, I'll be buying a Poppy too, but it winds me up that these rich people running these charities are getting richer, from money that is donated by the public, for a cause.

Where do you think the Boomtown Brat, Bob Geldof, (live aid) got his money from to buy Davington Priory, in Faversham. Not from "I Don't Like Mondays"  :o

Apparently the ceramic poppys at the Tower of London will be sold for £25 each, of which 10% goes to charity. I know theres overheads but 90% going elsewhere is more than a bit over the top. I can see that sort of ratio would put a lot of people off . Always do the poppy thing myself but i don't like seeing money being made off the back of charities.

Got our poppies from Chaplin's as we couldn't find any local. Well done 'appy.

I looked into this and found that the organisation that has put this great display together is in fact the organisation responsible for the upkeep of five Royal Palaces not a services charity like The Royal British Legion. They have a responsibility to act as a trading organisation - just like a High Street retailer

Therefore if they a making a net profit of GB£18.00 from a sale of GB£50.00 I think they are doing a good job. Any retailer would be please with a net profit of 36% after costs and I'm sure the money raised will be used wisely.

Glad I ordered mine spike, all sold out, only issue is that on the HRP tracking site they show delivery in jan next year, was going to give them as Christmas presents..

Why not get a photo of the display at The Tower and make a Christmas card of it on one of the internet card sites - you can send it to the lucky recipient and they will know what to expect and how much you love them

He's a very astute businessman.

After Live Aid and the Boomtown Rats collapse, it took about ten years to sort out their very messy accounts sorted out (not helped by a botched tax scheme dreamed up by former manager Facthna O'Kelly that saw them hammered for back tax from 1983, just as the hits dried up...). When it was concluded, it turned out Sir Bob, as the writer of 99% of the Boomtown Rats songs, was due a rather nice wad of cash, not only from past music sales, but from royalties for radio and TV plays that had not been forwarded on, further boosted by the first ever issue of the band's back catalogue on CD with bonus tracks.

He owned one third of Planet 24 the company behind the Big Breakfast and The Word. It was sold for £15 million in 1999 to Carlton and Geldof pocketed a cool £5 million

He is also a director of Castaway Television, which owns the rights to the reality show Survivor and Celebrity Survivor, both huge ratings successes in the US.
Shareholders, including Geldof, Lord Alii and Big Breakfast creator Charlie Parsons shared a dividend of £4.9m in 2008 on the back of sales that had risen to £8.8m from £6.1m in 2009.

888,000 yes agree it must be a logistical nightmare....
