Title: Payless - Pain free??
Post by: jaynek65 on September 11, 2014, 12:55:26 PM
Looking at hiring from payless for next month as they are currently cheaper than who we normally use (Pluscar - who are always faultless) and wondered if anyone else has used them and found it an easy process when collecting/returning the car at the airport?

We love the fact that when using Pluscar, you leave the airport, cross the road and they are there waiting for you, you pay, sign docs and go, all in all takes about 15mins and your off !

Where do you meet/collect keys from with Payless, I can't be doing with getting in a shuttle bus, or walking a long way, I just want a car within easy reach of arrivals !

Any advice would be very welcome :-)

Thanks x

My experience of Payless (February this year) was pain free positive - no problem whatsoever.

PAYLESS is just perfect. 2nd driver for free and excellent service.

Only one thing to watch out for: sometimes they put a "gas refund bill" on your credit card. Mostly around 18 Euros. But thats not always the case (only 30% I´d say). If you are in a hurry or the desk person is under stress you or he/she might forget about that if you return the car. Its nothing mean, people just forget these kind of things, especially if they are not put on on a regular basis, So just make sure you get your money back IF you have payed it when getting the car...

I've just used Payless (last week), there was no petrol charge or insurance ripoff - return with the same amount as you collected. They didn't actually check the fuel, nor for any damage. I've used them a couple of times and see no reason to change.

Simple kiosk in the airport concourse, sign the forms while waiting for suitcases and across the road to the car park to drive away.

You got it in 1

They don't need a credit card to secure the booking, but will need the card when your collecting. You will need licence and passport. Fuel policy is at you bring the car back with the same amount of fuel as when you collected, otherwise they will charge you to top it up, no problem if there is more as sometimes they will credit you the extra.

I want to hire with Payless after reading this forum. I have 2 endorsements on licence, totalling 6 points. The alternative would be my partner driving, but her photocard runs out while we would be away, and it takes 3 weeks to renew, which is not enough time.

I emailed them the above details and they said "to rent us need your driver's license is valid during all your vacation" (they ignored the question about the penalty points).

They either do not understand my query or do not understand the UK licence system (apparently some UK police have even been caught out getting it wrong!).
The licence WILL still be valid but the photocard will not. However, to get a new photocard I have to send the paper licence away as well.

I tried to explain again, and also get an answer about the penalty points, and they only said "I need a driver's license that is valid".

(i) The licence with 6 penalty points IS A VALID LICENCE, so are they confirming their insurance company will NOT care about those?
(ii) The other licence with almost out-of-date photocard will ALSO be valid, but it seems they probably won't accept it, so is it worth me sending it off and hoping to get it back in time as a backup? If it doesn't arrive, I have to hope they accept the penalty points, and don't leave us stranded, as the transfer bus will have left, and Corralejo is a fair distance!
(iii) If we got it replaced in time, do they need a deposit against a credit card in her name (it only has a 500 GBP limit)?

I can't answer your license questions (although, interestingly, in Canary Islands you get points knocked off your license for motoring offenses - but the points deduction is not transferable to your UK license - so don't try to be clever on that one!!).
As for a deposit, Payless might ask for a fuel deposit, but no other deposit as their cars are full insured with no excess - hence no deposit needed. I you try to steal the car you will not get far!

Thanks. I think the safe option is to wait - if her licence is replaced in time, book with that, otherwise book with mine, and bring the emails with me where they confirmed it was ok.

Do you think there is a chance they will sell out or increase prices if I was to wait until possibly less than a week before?

If they're anything like Cicar they never look very closely at the license anyway if its not the first time you have rented from them. I always produce my current valid license when I pick the car up but the paperwork they give me has details of my license which expired more than 10 years ago !

You could always make more than one reservation, with different companies. If one doesn't accept, try another. They don't take your credit card for reservations. I have a paper license, and I cannot recall Autoplus Car taking it out of the folder to examine the detail, and not sure she would know what a UK endorsement looked like, anyway! ;)

Without a valid photo card you might find that the insurance is invalid in the event of a claim, worst case you have a wipe out, you might not be covered, small print usually insists that the policy is only valid if the hirer has a current licence. The hateful lawyers would undoubtedly use it as a loophole not to pay. Be safe!

The paper counterpart licence is being done away with and is no longer valid from 8th June 2015.

All endorsements/points will be stored electronically and people like Insurance companies and Hire Car firms will have access via a website.
