I'm worried!!
Tuineje province only has two hotels to talk of - Las Playitas and one in Tarajalejo and opinion seems to be that the Island will close down without the tourist
Yet Gran Tarajal, second largest town in Fuerteventura, is a busy, thriving town, rich in it's own way, centre of tomato and goat farming [the Maxorata cheese factory is just up the road]. The local residents seem happy and content and not short of a few bob
With the wonderful carnival planned for this weekend do you think it will be failure without the high level of tourists, like those that attended the Caleta tourist day last Friday, being there?
It thrives because it's a proper Spanish town, Spike, it has a purpose related to the real indigenous economy; not a jumped up tourist haven whose only purpose is tourism. Some tourism, sure, but essentially ethnic Spanish with it's own vibrant culture.
You forgot the thriving Fisheries port and handling facility there and the Ferry point and Marina.
But there is some poverty too; we saw people begging outside the supermarkets, what seemed to be an excess of prostitution after dark and a local, who needed mental medical help, I think, living in a cave on the West-end beach: very sad.
Just got in from a lovely tapas dinner in Gran Tarajal. Having lived here for 5 years now, there is one girl that stands outside Padilla with a begging board now and again. There is NO prostitution, it would not be tolerated in this family orientated town, if fact the brothel at Cuchellete closed some months ago. The health centre has full mental health facilities for those that wish to use them.
Go after dark to the right places, Spike. It's all there in plain view for those who have eyes to see. Having said that, it's the same the world over.
you can't see prostitutes through rose tinted specs

I'd be very interested to see your definition of
excess and, perhaps, 'acceptable' level :D
If you direct me I will check it out and report back - we have spent many hours in Gran Tarajal as it is 10 minutes from where we live. I have NEVER seen the slightest hint of prostitution or any dodgy goings on there over many years
An ex-DJ, an innocent!? How can this be!?
Waggy - are you sure you're talking about Gran Tarajal in Tuineje province. There has been no ferry service from here for a year or so and beggars at very rare compared with Puerto and Corralejo [as I said just the one girl with a sign outside Padilla about once a month]
Where did you see the prostitutes in Gran Tarajal, the only brothel in the area was at Cuchellette on the main north / south road bypassing G.T. by about 5 kilometers? It closed about 3 months ago
Google The Gaslight Club of St James if you want to judge my innocence!
