Title: Europa or Movistar??....need TV & reliable internet
Post by: sunluvver on February 28, 2014, 13:18:52 PM
Please can anyone give me some advice....going around in circles!

I currently have WiFi which is just not reliable ( not close enough for canary.net ) the maximum speed I've seen is 420kbps in download and 0.1kbps in upload (!) . Connection is better in the morning, while it almost stops in the evening.

So I understand that my best option as I now want UK TV channels is to either subscribe to Telefonica & re connect the dormant telephone connection then buy the set top box or go to Europa for same.

Telefonica claim up to 10MB whereas Euro charge from 3MB ( which is enough for TV & general laptop use?) So Telefonica appear to be best option even though box is more to buy.

I have tried to set up Filmon through laptop but just unwatchable as kept glitching every 5 mins.

So I could really do with advice from someone who knows their stuff!!

PS. I am in Caleta

Have had Europa for a year with no problems. I have a telefonica line. You do not get as much as you pay for I get about 4mb and pay for 8mb.This is down to the estate we live on and cheap wiring I understand. So depending where you live, it could be the best for you. But I am no expert.

Thanks.... I think if I can just get TV & normal computer use that will be fine, how did you find the channels provided?

Europa don't provide anything that Movistar don't. Movistar own the lines and will charge you rental for them, over and above anything Europa charge. I've heard of people being very surprised to get both a Europa and a Movistar bill every month.

Of course, if you go with Europa then you'll have to wait for Movistar (their competitor) to fix any problems with the line. Human nature being what it is, does it surprise you that Europa's customers find it can take weeks to get a connection and when there's a problem on the line the engineer's on holiday / sick / can't find the house / can't find the problem / processes the job twice so you're billed twice / ...?

I'm with Movistar and they've dealt with things promptly, starting with connection a few hours after the request. You can speak with them in English over the phone, though I've yet to meet a technician who speaks anything but Spanish. But they know their job and language hasn't so far been a problem.

Agree totally with Sheila W. I have Movistar, my house is in Caleta and the signal is fantastic always get 10mb, sometimes even more believe it or not!  I am fairly close to the exchange located near the main car park at the White Centre which possibly helps.  A bit more expensive than Europa but well worth it if you need a reliable service.

Ordered Movistar/Telefonica ADSL and phone connection at Atlantico on Monday this week, and it was installed on Wednesday, just two days later - most impressed!
