Flu jab plans

Although we are just a fraction into summer, the regional health authorities are already making preparations for the winter by setting about procuring flu jabs to prevent an epidemic at the end of the year.

The Department of Health has announced it is to go its own way and buy the vaccines directly from the pharmaceutical industry rather than be part of the centralised purchase and distribution system put in place by Madrid last year, which caused havoc here when the vaccines had to be suspended due to a contamination problem with one of the centrally-supplied batches.

"We were treated like a colony by Madrid last year and had to wait ages for replacements. It was a total disaster and we only had 40 per cent of the flu jab cover we needed.  It will not happen this time" vowed senior Department official José Díaz Flores.
