Title: Sotavento Beach
Post by: luvfuert on July 03, 2013, 21:49:59 PM
Has anyone had problems with nudity on Sotavento playa? Is this a clothes optional beach as I have been led to believe, or have the textiles taken complete control. I noticed the FKK in chalk on the rocks heading south to the next bay, but was accosted by a non English speaking German when walking to costa calma on sotavento playa and the gist of what he was trying to say was that nudity was a no no. I shrugged, asked if he was happy and kept walking. Any thoughts?

Just a case of being sensible. Once you get past the 2 H10 hotels heading North towards Costa Calma there tend to be a lot less naturists. We would always cover up at that point on the rare occasions we walk that way. Anyway why would you want to head north, much nicer walk heading south! Have a good holiday.

I agree with Rich/Tina.

Head South where the naturist/nudist go and youll be in good company. At the moment the texstyles are migrating South due to the openess, cleanliness and good bathing conditions.

Doesn't help when the Cafe owner starts destroying the area by digging up all the shrubs and replacing with garish netting for the texstyles to hide behind etc

Forgive my ignorance, but what's FKK?

FKK is an abbreviation that is found in several european languages, it originaly stems from german and is short for "frei-körper-kultur" (free body culture). it can be found on signs at beaches and lakes, tellng the visitor that he is going to enter an area where it is common to swim and sunbath nude.

Thanks for that, can't say I've ever noticed it before but I'll look out for it in future, not that I expect it will make much difference to my dress code, or lack of it!

It's fine between Costa Calma and Meliha Gorriones

I hope all the naturists down there insist on their right to keep that part of the beach at least 'clothes optional' if not truly naturist. It's so easy for us to feel we don't have the right to do what comes naturally, just because there are so many of them. We've already lost far too many lovely beaches because they've muscled in and claimed them.

I'm a naturist, and love the beaches just south of Risco del Paso. I don't think naturists generally have any problem with people wearing swimsuits, it's usually a problem the other way round! If "textiles" were as open-minded and sensible, beaches would be nicer places. And I hope the usual suspects won't start the "not in front of my children" routine, because kids don't have any hang-ups about nudity unless it's been drummed into them by adults.

As a naturist I have no problem with 'textiles' sharing a beach or pool area. But if naturists don't have a problem with 'textiles' why do some naturist resorts insist on pools to be exclusively naturist?

Two reasons, AFAIK, one to keep pervs out of the pool area and the other is to maintain a better purity of the water. Swimming togs all contain residues of washing agents, powders etc, albeit in small quantities but when introduced to swimming areas, additional chemicals need to be put in etc...also there are those who sit on grass, muck etc then would jump in the pool with all sorts of crud in their cossies. This is a particular gripe of French Campsite owners who only permit speedos to be worn in their pools  :o

The nuddies tend to be more aware of these requirements and shower before getting in...

I asked the question initially because I understand Sotavento Playa is the long stretch with the three beach bars and as the post by rich and tina specifically stated the Sotavento playa I sought clarification. I stay in costa calma and like to walk back in the evening from the Playa Esmeralda which I use as a base for walking south to Risco El Paso and further. I stay in costa calma at least once every three months so am very familiar with the area.I have noticed naturists on this stretch of beach on several of my visits but not to a great extent. Would just like to feel comfortable in the knowledge that this is ok?

Never had this issue and would have tried to respond the same way you did. Let us think about this: it isn't even his country - he is a guest of Spain. I would have been receptive if someone of Spain had asked me to avoid part of his or her beach.

My guess this was a rare occurrence - a "one off". I would ignore the incident and move on.  Your response was quite reasonable.

Keep on trekking.

Probably to save money on chemicals - the various substances and impurities carried by swimsuits (and especially boardshorts) play the merry cat and banjo with pool cleanliness.
