Airfares: Heavier Passengers 'Should Pay More'

Airlines should make heavier passengers pay more for their plane tickets and lighter ones less, it has been suggested.

The controversial pay-as-you-weigh pricing scheme has been mooted by a Norwegian professor, who argues that weight and space should be taken into account by airlines pricing their tickets.
The first would see fares directly linked to the weight of a person and their belongings, with a fixed rate for kilograms per passenger.

Under this method, a person weighing 60kg would pay half the airfare of a 120kg  person. And rightly so !!!

What a great idea. I am charged extra for going a kilo over with my luggage, yet someone can weigh 30 kg more than I do. I suppose it won't stop them spilling into your seat over and under the armrest, but may just make me feel slightly better knowing they have paid for the excess fuel needed. I think it should go on BMI then taller slimmer people aren't unfairly penalised. Ill be kind and say over BMI 30 ( 20-25 is considered healthy). Each point over is and extra fee. Would do the nations health  a world of good. Weigh them on the way home too. May stop the increase in AI ( AI you can eaters! - and do they! )  As I am sure you can guess, I would be more than happy to police this for Mr O'Leary!!!!!
Just as an aside , I would also impose a ban on the sale of fish and onion containing sandwiches, the people who eat these always sit by me!

123456 has it right. It's not fair when you weigh 8 stones and you get penalised for being 1 kilo over on your baggage, and the bloke behind you weighs 25 stones and goes through no problem. :'(

A fantastic idea that will only be supported by people like myself who make a bean pole look fat.

They should have an aggregate weight for passenger and luggage and if you go over then you pay extra. That way thinnies could make a few bob at departure 'muling' the fatties bags on at half price. Their bags are always stuffed coz the clothes are so much bigger. Great opportunity there I think.

This time next year Rodney!

This topic has actually been aired on the pilots website, among others, the `professor` in question is actually something of a nutbag, who regularly makes silly statements. If this were to become a reality it would cost all of us flyers a lot of money. Airlines would have to weigh people, work out the exact weight, which really wouldnt make any significance difference to the `all up weight` of the aircraft which would end up with the same fuel burn. You`d just have to pay for all the calorie counters to be employed........

The way it works now, and will in the future, is that every passenger has a notional weight per person which is the standard they work on. Baggage on the other hand is far more easily measured by far less people thats why you get charged.............and always will do  :-* :-*

Truncheon Meat, that would be my next suggestion. That would make it fair. One allowance for all, minus your weight = luggage allowance. As for people with health conditions, I am not sure this is a valid argument.
Yes we all know it would never happen, it is just another gripe in the unfairness of life! But if I have paid for my seat, please allow me it. Maybe I wouldn't mind someones over-spill if they wished to pay for a proportion of my fare. This will never happen either. Travel with your own companions and book your seats!!!!

Have I missed something here?

The subject title is stated as a fact and yet it is pure fantasy in Woes mind.

I have sat by all shapes and sizes and the most annoying by far, irrespective of size are the whinging, moaning, ignorant people like Woe :-*

"Have you seen the price of these  Ryan air/Easyjet toasties, I could buy a whole loaf of bread and a pound of cheese for the price of this rip off."

"It tastes like cardboard"

"Ive eaten bigger pieces of snot"

At least a fat person would happily pay the price and enjoy it! (http://www.sherv.net/cm/emoticons/eating/eating-hot-dog.gif)

Give me a fat happy person any day, even if I have to give em my arm rest  :D

They couldhave a seat size gauge, like the hand baggage cage. Won't fit? - buy the next seat as well. Simple.
Title: Re: PAY-AS-YOU-WEIGH AIRFARES TO BE INTRODUCED
Post by: KWC on March 27, 2013, 10:45:11 AM
Why dont they have a row or two or just the 2 wider seats at the back and charge a permium for that seat. Perhaps the cost of the middle (missing) seat  added to the cost of the two remaining seats.

Im sure the additonal comfort that the larger people will get, will offset any pain from paying a little more. There would be less squashed people getting off the plane at the other end, as its bad enough sitting getting squashed front to back in some of those airlines - TC being one of them ;D

Tin hat on now, fire away.

Ryanair let you buy "Extra comfort seats"

Can I purchase an extra seat for a large person?

Yes, large passengers can purchase an extra seat for comfort.

To book an extra seat for comfort go online and select 2 seats the first seat should be booked in the actual passenger's name and the extra seat should be entered as COMFORT SEAT as the Last Name and EXTRA as the first Name. The name EXTRA COMFORT SEAT will then be displayed on the reservation and online boarding pass - see extract below from an online check-in boarding pass.

Reserved seating in emergency rows 1,16 and 17 may not be purchased if you have purchased an extra seat for item/comfort

Please note that all passengers purchasing an extra seat can use online check-in.The same travel document details must be entered for both seats when checking in online. Online check-in is available from 15 days prior up to 4 hours before the scheduled flight departure times. There is no cabin or checked baggage allowance associated with the purchase of an extra seat.

Due to safety regulations extra seats cannot be purchased for infants.

Extra comfort seat boarding pass

Passengers who have booked an extra seat should arrive at the boarding gate at least 30 minutes prior to the scheduled flight departure time. If you are unable to locate two seats together on the aircraft please contact our cabin crew as they will be in a position to ensure that you have two seats together.

** Spanish Resident and Large Family Discount is not applicable on EXTRA seats**

Hope you don't have to qualify in any way for a comfort seat because as a thinnie I'm going to book a comfort seat so the fat buggers can't make my life hell for three and a half hours spilling over into my seat and bitching like mad every time they have to haul their bulk out of the poor overloaded seat when I want to get a bit of exercise.  :-*

I have sat next to larger than average passengers before, and TBH, it aint fun.

I hate the game of arm rest wrestling. He moves an inch to get a mag and Im back in control of the disputed territory. Then I will move to scratch my nose, and low and behold I have lost my arm rest.  That goes on for 4 1/4 hours and Im exhausted at the end, my elbow is black and blue, but if im the last elbow to be on the arm rest when it touches down, I declare myself the arm rest champion for the TCX 123 flight out of Glasgow.

The plane load of understanding passengers applaud loudly and of course I get a gift token from the airline to spend on the next flight, subject to my not being engaged in yet another bout of "its my attractive (to me anyway) arm rest" and I can move my arm to hand the voucher over.

I am awaiting the call up for the UK reginal finals starting anything soon. ;D ;D

And these unfortunate people are REALLY obese?? yes they may put some weight on, especially with steroid treatment, but not overtly so, percentagewise.  And to be blunt, the majority of (but of course not all) people with maturity onset diabetes develop the disease BECAUSE they are overweight in the first place....ask any healthcare professional!  They will also tell you that about 90% of people are obese for one quite startling reason - they ingest far more calories than they burn off.

Because of the direct fuel/weight correlation, pay as you weigh seems fair to me.

If you are deemed overweight to the extent you are causing discomfort to other fare paying passengers, and if you cannot prove it is due to medication, ie a doctors report, then a nice 20% fat tax sounds appropriate to me.

St Michael might even consider Lard opening at the lower end of the alimentary canal through which solid waste is eliminated from the body flights. Only for the overweight and at a price to cater for extra fuel consumption. Wider seats and aisles for maximum comfort, and 15 stone stewardesses so they don't feel disadvantaged or persecuted.

Everyones a winner then

have you seen this article about the easyjet flight from Liverpool to Geneva could not take off because it was too heavily loaded. some passengers had to get off Every aircraft type has strict rules about the total weight it can carry, depending on factors such as the length of the runway, the air temperature and the distance to be flown. To compute the weight limits, airlines have the option of weighing each passenger and their baggage. But British airlines instead use an estimate of how much each passenger weighs.

The rules issued by Europe's Joint Aviation Authorities instruct the airlines to assume that each male passenger weighs 88kg, and each female 70kg (children of either gender score 35kg).

We are getting fatter compared to years ago, thats a fact, for whatever the various reason. Main one being the type and amount of food we eat. Processed food in particular is full of sugars, salts and fat to make them more tasty.  If you were to taste this stuff without the salt, sugars and fat, it would taste like number two.

Now I read that vets are seeing more and more Horses with back problems due to the fat or overweight riders!

And now we have planes that can't get off the ground.  What next a levy imposed on us by David Cameron for being overweight and taxing the health care system?

Joke about weights vrs planes.

2 irish hunters were out in the wilds of the Rockies shooting deer, after shooting 4 deer, they called in the Cessna to pick them up.

On landing the pilot said, 4 deer shot, sorry this plane won't take the weight buddy. Pat said it did the last time we were over, albeit it was a different company.
So the pilot said oh ok then, lets give it a try.

With the plane loaded up with them and the deer he tried to take off, and get to a decent altitude, only to crash land a few miles away.  Pat said to Mick "where do you think we are?" Mick said "not far from where we crashed last year methinks"?

If only they had flown with Samoan airways  ;D ;D

As for the diabetes thing - my husband has type 2 and has been able to control his weight with his diet. Self control is a lot to do with it.

Screaming kids and babies on flights should be controlled too. Nobody should be made to endure 4 hours of this "Chinese Torture"  :o  when they've paid extortionate fares  :'(

For those of you who are tired of flying with the Riff-Raff, you can always buy your own VIP jetliner.

A mere 54 million euros  :o

I would offer to split the cost with you, but that would rather defeat the purpose..... ;D
