Spain's Parliament has passed a motion calling for formal consideration of a tax on all oil found in the country's territorial waters, including the Canaries. The revenue generated by the tax would be used to compensate the regions and local areas affected by oil drilling. The move is seen as a sweetener to soften opposition in the Canaries to plans by oil company Repsol to drill off the coast of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura next year. Canarian MPs in Madrid voted against the motion and the regional government has again insisted that a possible tax "in no way changes" its anti-oil stance.
