Some beaches are more naturist-friendly than others.  On most beaches, nobody bats an eyelid.  I've never understood the views of people who choose to go to a known naturist beach and then grumble about there being naked people on it.

And on the other hand, a non naturist beach like Caleta which is known as being a family friendly beach and resort,  may not look on naturists  as a welcome addition.

When I first came here Caleta Beach WAS Naturist. Many people walked about naked. It wasn´t until the departure of most of the Germans to the South, and the influx of Prude Brits with their Thomsons Family Hotels etc, that it changed.

I'm another "don't mind" - for other people on the beach, that is. ::)

Personally, the whole idea of putting on one tiny piece of stretchy fabric, or worse two tiny bits, then getting sand inside; then going in the sea and coming out with them sticking to me and threatening to expose bits they shouldn't; then getting wet sand inside and trying to get it out without exposing any "naughty" bits; then trying to change, again without exposing aforesaid "naughty" bits, and giving up completely on actually getting dry, so putting clothes on over damp "naughty" bits...  :o :o :o

I mean, WHY would anyone want to do that ??? But if they want to, I'll try not to stare, I'll try not to laugh, I'll try not to point. Naturists are very open-minded. 8)

Up to about 15 years ago, I thought naturists were odd eccentrics. Then we came to Fuerty for the first time, & found the best bit of beach was about 80% naturist. So we gave it a go & found it was so much better than regular swimming / sun bathing. So much so, that using a regular textile beach feels horrid now. I don't consider myself a naturit / nudist and would never march through Corry or Moro Jable in the buff, for two reasons. 1. It would cause offence to locals & visitors. 2: There is no reason to do it.

So, "Don't knock it until you have tried it" is my oppinion

Paddster's is exactly the sort of response you can expect to get when you behave in a manner that people perceive to be inappropriate in that particular place. And it will be face-to-face rather than than the safety of being on-screen.

Someone on another thread has recently experienced this for themselves.

We've been to Caleta, and, from what we saw, we wouldn't want to take our clothes off there, though there are almost certainly perfect areas for freedom.

Why spoil your own time with possibly aggressive confrontations, when there are so many places around the Island to enjoy nakedness.

We've been publicly nude in some surprising places, so don't for one moment think we are against it.

What surprises me is the fact that people book holidays in hotels on known naturist beaches, then complain about the naked people on the beach, and how it's not safe to take their children on the beach!  Look at some of the hotel reviews and you'll see what I mean.

Can't say i'm over impressed by it all myself. But if folk want to go bare assed while i'm around i can live with it. However if i was at the age that my kids were playing with their buckets and spades around me i wouldn't be too happy with them being subjected to confrontations with naked adults. Especially if it was a family beach. Looking at posts by naturists themselves on here you can tell the difference between the ones who take it seriously and the idiots who just use it as a platform for voyuerism.
They give all naturists a bad press so... i'm with padd a good slapping from an irate parent might do them a bit of good and naturism a big favour at the same time.

If you like to go nude, follow the Germans, hardly a prude amongst them and very few exhibitionists.
El Cotillo used to be a very laid back nuddy place but since the developments of the last 10 years the place is getting very screwed up Brit.
I used to love the freedom of getting my nethers tanned but not anymore, you need a heat shield to protect yourself from some of the glares nowadays.

This is something we read time and again, so my reply isn't particularly addressed to stedge but to all people who think this way: in what way do you think children 'suffer' from being 'confronted' by naked people?

My experience has always been that children couldn't care less, in fact the younger ones who haven't yet been 'conditioned' don't even seem to notice. It's the conditioning that their parents give them that makes them afraid of other people who bare their flesh and disgusted with their own bodies, yet at the same time hugely interested in this "forbidden fruit" hidden away under bits of material.

I think what's really sad is when children grow into individuals who are terribly complexed about their bodies, who even have trouble letting their close family and their doctors see their bodies. When an adolescent cries and hides in her room because Dad saw her breasts, or when a teenager who's had a skin cancer refuses to let the dermatologist look under his briefs (both real cases), then you have people with problems. It isn't naturism that causes the problem; it's naturism that avoids this type of problem. Our son was involved in a road accident at the age of 14 and spent time in a special unit that had the best medical facilities but no money for anything else. They had a shared bathroom - a pretty special one where immobilised kids could be bathed, so lots of special equipment: they just didn't have the time to cater for one kid at a time and this caused terrible anxiety for some of the kids; and absolutely none for ours who simply accepted this as necessary.

Sorry but i don't think thats strictly true and it most certainly isn't sad that many parents don't look on nudity as the 'norm'. Fact of the matter is despite your and others liberal views on it theres a lot of adults let alone children that are not comfortable with public nudity. And for those that aren't, who is it to tell them that they should be?. Unfortunately naturism does offend some people and for that reason it should be kept to areas designated for that purpose. i can fully understand parents who feel protective towards their kids on beaches , i always was myself. And i'm no prude with fixations about myself and nor are my children who are now adults themselves. The causes of problems to do with bodily complexes and sexual hang ups in later life usually run a bit deeper than seeing or not seeing someone in the buff on a beach.

Disappointed, but not suprised, this is getting into an `us and them` situation, which may have been the reason for such a post to start with. It often is. The fact remains that some are not happy with naturism at all, for whatever reason, and there is nothing at all wrong with that. Then there are others, like myself, who enjoy it for the nice, friendly, easy going people of all types and ages that you meet socially. Not to mention the freedom from clingy wet nylon  8) but both types are engaging in the personal freedoms that we all enjoy and must mutually respect.

This lovely Island has over 300 beaches of which maybe 6 or so arn`t suitable for naturists.......the rest are, so what is there to debate..In short there is plenty of room for all of us so let`s all try to see and respect each others point of view and look forward to our next visit in whatever state of dress we choose  :D

As to the voyeurs/pervs and exhibitionists, you dont come into either of the above categories and therefore your views don`t count  :-*

Interesting that it so often seems the this is a debate which causes most of an issue with either Brits or the Puritan decendents of Brits - the rest of Europe doesnt seem to care. I for one enjoy the liberal freedom of Spain in general and as stated above there is plenty of space for all.

Most kids dont give a hoot whats going on around them so long as there is water sand and sun.

In Corrie in 6 days woot !

I am neither for nor against naturism.  Just think that one should dress or undress according to the area in which you seek to sunbathe. It is just common courtesy after all.  You wouldn't turn up to a funeral in a lap  dancer's outfit.

The island suits all sorts, no need to try to invade areas which are not appropriate for either textiles or nudists.

Lonesome Dove Your point is totally correct.    I have lots of say on this over the years so stayed quiet this time.   If Ma, Pa,and the weans decide to plonk themselves in the middle of nudist when they have masses of beach to choose from.   I often think it is so Pa can get a good eyeful of the naked ladies!!

Dan you don't get many page 3 birds on the beaches i've been on. A few saggy thrupenny bits and some swinging shrivelled old gonads is about all i've seen. lol

But point taken about everyone should have a place. I've never disputed that. As has been said common courtesy to others should be the rule.

I don't have any real problem with them, but it would be nice to have beaches that are nudist  or strictly textile [as they call us] wandering along a lovely beach with the kids only to encounter a nudists isn't very nice!

And even worse some naturist's, seem to think its ok to engage in sexual activity on the beach in those stone shelters,  thats not on imo   >:(

No decent naturist would do that in a public place, any more than a decent textile would. They are exhibitionists, or worse. Please don't put them in the same basket as naturists, who want to be "as nature intended", but as civilised members of the human race rather than as rutting animals.

Interesting point re-kids on a naturist beach.

Three years ago we went to a hotel to the south edge of Costa Calma with our two small grand kids, knowing that perhaps at some time during the holidays they might see naked bodies walking along the beach, as they tend to do, so there is no way you can shield them from it!.

They did and never batted an eyelid.
They were only 4 and 6 at the time, and we are going back with them at the end of April.

Will be interesting to see if they still adopt their innocent views on naked people, but Im sure like others have said, why hide a naked body as we all have one.

Its adults that can only screw it up for children, not the other way round, so let them grow up as naturally as can be and hold back the perceived stigma as long as its possible.

Soon....very soon  :D :D :D

Actually its quite funny there. The Germans are quite a serious bunch, and in Charco you have to wait for the tide to come in to fill the pool so you need to time your arrival if you want to swim in that area as opposed to Monkey rock where the divers go.  As soon as it starts to fill up they all go down and crouch down in the water to meditate as the fresh current is coming in, a fabulous feeling actually, but there are strictly no giggles allowed at all....they give you filthy looks if you make a sound. :-X There is another regular, a permanently brown fine specimen of a man  who lies down beside his huge NOT GAY sign. It always makes me laugh. :D :D :D

We went to Charco del Palo last year, and were very disappointed by it.  Thought it was rather shabby.  Knew that there wasn't a beach, but the rock pools aren't a substitute.  Most of the restaurantswere closed, although I believe Jardin Tropical has re-opened.  Certainly wouldn't go again.

I know what you mean about it being shabby, and I'm inclined to agree. On the other hand, most (if not all) of Corralejo is shabby; in fact most of Fuerteventura is a bit shabby, if truth be told. :)

I always feel sad when people come to Corralejo for the first time and leave reviews about peeling paint, cigarette ends, rust and derelict buildings: even though it might be better without those things, to come all that way and not find the true Corralejo. :'( It's a question of getting beneath that outward appearance and getting to know the place itself - to feel the atmosphere. I liked Charco very much when I went there briefly in December 2011, although I thought at the time that it took itself a bit seriously. I really think you ought to just giggle, fifi - not your fault if the rest of them have no sense of humour. :P

Philip Larkin's "This be the verse" sums up that argument.  However, if parents want to keep their football kicking, howling & screaming offspring off the beach, thats fine by me  ;)
