Can you actually see them? They are scratched square "footprints" on the rocks that are closer to the camera :)

Went there with my former spanish class yesterday. More pics to follow eventually :)

Great photos as always Tamara.
I'm hoping some day I'll get the chance to do the walk myself.

Thanks, fifi and duncolm :)

if you go up there, mind the surface. Although Tindaya has more solid rock and less scree than some others, there are some patches that are slippery and one guy fell on one of those on the way down, got some scratches on his face. He was wearing shoes with poor grip, so that probably was one of the reasons why he lost balance completely, but I can confirm that I slipped a couple of times myself, and my shoes were good. So - beware :)

Tamara
Can you just go up the mountain, or do you still need  a permit from the council?

Hi canarysid,

We had a group permit. Here is an extract from my blog post :

"* - about permissions. I've chatted to the guard/guide/what have you about it. It was very clear that he didn't want to say it directly, but the gist of what he said was "yes, you need the permission from ayuntamiento, and you can't walk up the mountain even with the permission in the afternoon, but we can't watch the mountain 24/7. People still go up without permission, at night etc." So, here you are. If you want to be within the local regulations, you must go, get the permission and go up in the morning. If you go without the permission, or at a different time, most likely outcome is you won't get stopped anyway. What I forgot to ask is what will happen if you are stopped - are you just told off or fined or what? I will ask next time."

so in theory yes you do need a permit, and even then restrictions apply. In practice I keep talking to people who shrug and say - you want to go, you just go.  Very unlikely that you will get caught, and I don't know what happens if you are caught.

"strictness of our laws is balanced by universal disregard for them" :)

I don't drag my sons around for the same reason :)

Which is a shame of course, now it's a good time for walks, later, in spring and summer it's going to be way too hot

Tamara - there are some nice walks around that are a lot flatter, but still have nice views  :)
