Title: Internet signal boosters
Post by: Fordyventura on January 13, 2013, 22:14:24 PM
Has anyone brought an internet signal booster over from the UK to boost the signal for Ccanary.net. Can anyone recommend one and tell me how they work please.Do you just plug it into your mains supply.I use canary .net when I come over for holidays but the signal is very weak and we have to go in the garden to get on Skype.

My Son bought one last summer to boost the reception of the V-sat wi-fi signal. I will ask him what he bought and let you know.

Must be possible to buy a booster  over here, say in Rosario somewhere - anyone know where? I looked up "Boosters" and it said the Linksy Wireless-N Range Extender Bridge (RE1000) will work. Just need to know where to get one. CanaryNet will install one I've heard but they charge about €50 I have been told so if it is a matter of just plugging it in????

Something like this is probably the cheapest way of getting a usable signal. You would also require a USB extension cable to get the aerial outside a window or similar position for optimum performance. There are more expensive ALFA models around as well . Mundo Digital in Rosario (up the hill from the 3 bums roundabout) have a good selection in stock. I have also seen some 'unbranded' range extenders in the Chinese shop - they are behind the cash desk -with the more expensive items !  I haven't seen any of the Chinese ones  working so can't comment on their performance.

Does anyone know of the location of the main Canarynet transmitter in Corralejo ? Also what is the SSID and is it Open Security.

Only asking as I am trying to configure a Universal Repeater before I head over there, I am modding an old Linksys router and adding a high gain antenna (if I can !)

Thanks for the info

Regards
Mike

Fordyventura if you are receiving there full signal you cannot improve on that, i tried it on a wifi signal and there was no improvement it will show up loads of signals but of course you need log in pass words to access them

My Son (who knows about these things better than I) used two items last summer:-
TP Link 2.4GHz 8dBi Indoor Desktop Omni directional Antenna costing £9.59 from Misco.
and a TP-Link Wireless 150Mbps High Gain USB Adapter costing £11.99, again from Misco.
It worked well, especially when the antenna was OUTSIDE.
