Title: The Canary Islands childrens heart unit is to close
Post by: fifi on December 06, 2012, 12:30:29 PM
Heart unit to close
Doctors at the big Maternity and Children's Hospital in Las Palmas have expressed anger at the decision to close its pioneering heart surgery unit at the end of the year.

30.11.2012 - The unexpected news was announced by the Hospital at the beginning of this month and immediately triggered a storm of protest, given that it is the only unit of its kind in the Canaries and closure will mean that all children with congenital heart conditions will need to be flown to the mainland for treatment. The Hospital says it has no choice but to shut the unit down because of the high cost and the existence of alternatives elsewhere, but doctors say the potential cost in lives lost will be much higher. Families who have used the unit since it was opened a decade ago have joined the battle to have the decision reversed and argue that it is much cheaper and more important than, for example, the regional broadcasting corporation.
