Title: speed cameras
Post by: midlife on October 21, 2012, 10:01:20 AM
watch out for speed cameras.  There are two fixed ones between the airport and corralejo on the dual carriage way bit.  There may be others and they don't paint them yellow.  My English TomTom did warn me though!  Today there was a plain police car doing a radar trap between Caleta and the airport - catching everyone late for a flight...  Does anyone know what happens if you get a speeding ticket, do we get points?

The points system is different in Spain they DEDUCT points from your total plus there is an on the spot fine if caught by Guardia or fine sent to the hire company which is then taken off your card.
The speed cameras have been there quite a long time but all the resident know about them.

As Globetrotter says, just becuase you are a tourist and you have left Fuerteventura, don´t think you´ll get away with speeding. The fine WILL come out of your Credit Card details left with the Hire Company.

It´s a 50 kph zone all the way from just before the Castle Roundabout in Caleta, all the way to the last Roundabout at Las Salinas Golf Course. As signposted.

Payless don't look for cc details whilst booking or when making payment. They seem to like cash ;D Wonder how you can be fined in this situation?

Good point.  Maybe they´re doing something the Taxman doesn´t know about. Cash in hand is the Spanish way.

Yes, that's why paying an on-the-spot fine would worry me - who gets the cash?

I am told that some of the police types, just how many there are in Fuerty I cannot hazard a quess at!!!  Have credit card machines in their cars.    So at least paying that way you are fairly sure it is not going in the back pocket.
You could ask for a receipt if paying cash but know if I was one of these dodgy copper types would have official receipt book and also run off on my computer type receipts for my back pocket dealings.

I saw a big flash silver grey car this morning pulling over a small Flatbed truck with wooden planks strapped on it which were sticking up about 6ft in the air over the cab. Two Guardia Civil with yellow jackets stepped out with a clipboard.

So they´re using plain cars now.

Just for my own curiosity, has anyone got any personal evidence of fines being extracted from credit/debit cards without your permission? I`m asking because I`m half expecting a speeding fine and after a good trawl round the net I have not been able to find anyone who has first hand experience of what I would think would be a very underhand, if not illegal, practice. Nearly everyone has got the fine document via the post several weeks after the offence and generally speaking have had some difficulty paying it as the website only seems to work now and then and the phone goes unanswered. I might just ignore mine and see what happens. Or blame it on that young Moroccan  lad that I lent the car to. I have his address somewhere. He assured me he had insurance and a current licence.

Be careful zedzedeleven, you could be asked to step one side at the airport.

The passport check at arrivals in Fuerte is derisory, the guy struggles to keep awake, never scans passport chips or barcodes and on one occasion  the booth was empty and we all just wandered through into baggage reclaim. I don`t mind paying a speeding fine if it`s a reasonable amount but these (rumoured) 300 Euro fines are way over the top and I will not be paying one that size. I didn`t pay the last one I got in England but I think the loophole I used has been closed. Fining people for speeding has nothing to do with improving road safety and everything to do with revenue generation.

I have seen a guy pulled to one side at arrivals and nailed about a speeding fine on main land Spain. This was about two years ago. Just because you think they are asleep dont mean they wont bite.

Could be the case ZZ.   Before you fly to Spain as part of terrorism etc you have to submit your details including passport number.   Could be their systems check to see if you are undesirable (I will make no comment in your case!!) and no doubt for outstanding fines, etc etc.  So could be very possible.    Guy had list of people and pics coming of a flight to be stopped.

I`m not saying it isn`t theoretically possible Dan, just that A) it always seems to happen to a friend of a friend and B) in today`s austere climate and civil service cut backs there are bigger fish to fry. I`m not even sure that a speeding fine is a criminal offence as such. More a civil matter, like leaving your bin out too long.

Wrong, wrong and wrong

There has always been confusion over speeding regarding criminal offence and criminal conviction. Speeding is a criminal offence in that it is in breach of road traffic law, but it only results in a criminal conviction if it's at court. It's not a criminal conviction if it's dealt with via FPN

I personally know of 2 people one at Frankfurt airport and one at Sur Reina Sofia Airport
Tenerife who have been stopped and made to pay speeding fines from previous visits.

As to austere climate that is exactly the reason that these incidents are growing, its relatively easy for the authorities to enforce and easy money in that the info is on the system, the culprit is in front of them and is going no where until the penalty is paid.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is some sort of incentive involved hence previously docile officials now being proactive.

The never ending tide of illegals flooding into Fuerte from Morocco and the escalating serious crimes that have their origins in drugs should be a priority for any police force, more so one that depends on tourists for it`s paycheck. Bilking us for non victim "crimes" in an effort to supplement the revenue is just so pathetic. Another example of a state failing to grasp the nettle.
Again, a friend of a friend quoted as an example, so no, not wrong wrong wrong, more urban myth "grannie in a blanket" type tales. Show us the ticket/receipt.

Sounds like you maybe sweating next time you arrive in Fuerteventura and have to get your passport out ;)

Perhaps then you would be good enough to let us know if it is an urban myth?  ;D

Not a very clear picture as I took it through my windscreen, but the Black Car on the right is a big Renault, possibly a Megane Coupe. Inside are two Policemen with yellow jackets on. You can see the lens of the camera reflecting in the rear windscreen.
This was parked outside the Elba Sara Hotel while I was on my way to Las Salinas. I snapped it on the way back. Didn´t want to take it too close in case they saw me  :-X

Zed Zed you are not in uk now they will take you to the hole in the wall to get there money no money you will be arrested until you pay up. My Friend got fined two hundred euros for driving his quad bike on main carriage way and not on cycle lane reduced to 100 euro as they followed him home to pay cash. ps they gave him a receipt.

Ah yes, forgot about this. Well, a ticket duly plopped onto the doormat at ZZ11 towers, and after consulting wiser heads than mine I decided to cough up, mainly because I wasn`t just over the speed limit, I was well over. You see, I thought I was in a 90kph, travelling at about 95. Turned out I was in a 70kph travelling at 95. I was advised that the police might pull me over for another unrelated offence at a future date and they would certainly run a check on me. The chances of being stopped at customs are nil according to other websites that specialise in this sort of thing. So, £35 if paid before the cut off date was cheap and so I paid it. Bargain by uk standards and nil points to boot. I still think that there is (was) an element of entrapment about it, confusing signage and constantly varying limits that have no basis in road safety, deliberately designed to bilk the tourist. It will not stop me driving at speeds I want to drive at, just make me a bit more vigilant of police camera cars lying in ambush.
Must say though, I had absolutely no problem with the Jefatura De Trafico website, unlike some people, it all went like clockwork. Got stung by the bank on card charges, robbing barstids. I can`t see anyone who doesn`t intend returning to Fuerte coughing up though, Egypt and Greece could be long term winners in all of this.  Smacks of biting the hand that feeds it.

Customs in Spain, same as everywhere dont give a dam about the traffic offence ZZ, its the policeman in the glass cage that calls you to one side.

Yeah, I know, the one that can hardly be bothered to look at the passport held up in front of him.

Got back from FV last week to find a Recorded Delivery letter waiting for me - it was a speeding ticket from the day after I arrived on the island - a €300 fine!

Fair Cop - it was a traffic camera with date, time & speed.

The first time that I tried to pay through the website it was unavailable, however the second time I got through without problem & because I was paying promptly the fine was reduced by 50%.

Whilst there I was a passenger in a car that was pulled over for a random breath test - apparently this is now very common, & they make a point of stopping hire cars in the afternoon to catch holiday makers who have had a beer / glass of wine or two with their lunch.  It's worth knowing that the drink / drive limit in Spain is approx half what it is in the UK, so it's very easy to go over it without realising!

I have just received a speeding fine today from my holiday back in October in Fueteventura. I was caught doing 12mph over the limit on the FV-02.Now if I have gone over the limit then fair enough I will hold my hands up and pay fine but at 300 Euros this is ridiculous. Is this the normal  fine for a speeding ticket? Also I was wondering if I would have any points added to my UK driving licence?
Thanks Graham

Regarding your question on the amount of a speeding fine you received recently, please see the link below to Janet Anscombe based in Tenerife.  The link shows the speeding fines that are imposed and the categories in which they fall and the relevant number of points involved.  Not sure how you go on with having a UK licence, maybe another forum user can advise.

This link says there will be no points lost/gained on your UK licence; there would have been 2 points taken from a Spanish licence: http://europost.info/eu-insights/europe-wide-traffic-fines-come-into-force/ (ftp://europost.info/eu-insights/europe-wide-traffic-fines-come-into-force/)
