Employers are demanding the closure of the treatment plant of El Cotillo

The putrid vapors rise and spread over the village of El Cotillo with the heat. Tourists are wondering what that nauseating smell is and neighbours wonder how much longer the torture will continue. Traders are now demanding the closure of the treatment plant because it represents a public health problem and hurts their business.

The president of the Business Association of El Cotillo, Agustin Melian Martin, has exposed the complaints of traders in two letters sent to the City of La Oliva, the Council of Fuerteventura Island Water and Water Directorate of the Ministry of Works and Transport of the Canary Islands.

Employers argue that the sewage treatment plant malfunctions, "not done any cleaning process, the sewage is deposited on the premises, which are nothing more than an open pit, not waterproof and below sea level." They say the tank overflows often "running the waste by road and sometimes spilling into the sea near  a beach that is 50 meters away which is frequented by children and families especially in summer and holiday periods" .

And that the "stench" not only affects the residents of nearby homes, but surrounds the village of El Cotillo especially in hot weather.

The poor condition of the sewage plant is El Cotillo affects all merchants, but perhaps more to those who prepare meals for visitors, both native and foreign. "It's a really nasty situation to be having lunch in a restaurant and not being able to avoid the smell that emerges from the treatment plant facilities. Taking into account that the village of El Cotillo is fully tourist,  that the vision that is giving the visitor is absolutely precarious and is bad for business "states  Agustin Melian, president of the employers association in his letter to the Authorities.

There are some hard accusations being made, which,  if true, would constitute environmental crime by the City of La Oliva, whose vehicles collect the waste when the sewage tank overflows, "then dump them on  the roadsides and in various areas of vegetation, polluting groundwater resources. "

Mosquitoes, cockroaches, rats, hedgehogs, pigeons and all kinds of bugs live at home in the vicinity of the treatment plant. Neighbours have to view their world through nets on their doors.

We used to have an Apartment about 50 ft. away from the sewage plant in El Cotillo. Sometimes the stench was so bad we decided to move out. It was more or less just an open pit. Plenty of Tomatoes in there though. :P :P

Could this be the perfect place for farming on the Island with the moisture, seeds, and fertilizer naturally supplied? :)

Didn't I read somewhere (probably old forum) that there was a proposal to build a brand new treatment plant at El Roque and pump the sewage up from El Cotillo?

Sorry to burst your bubble Fi  but your idea of growing organic soft fruit and veg by the sea may be just a pipe dream.

The Canary Islands government releases the new treatment plant project in El Cotillo

The dismantling of the treatment plant of El Cotillo is closer. The Canary Islands government signed this week the award of the work of a new station replaces the old and will be away from populated areas. We finally responds to the demand of the residents and business owners.

The people of El Cotillo can start breathing again. At least be able to do upon completion of the construction of the new wastewater treatment plant, whose construction on a plot of 20,000 square meters of La Masmorrilla (situated in an area between El Roque and Lajares) could begin in the coming weeks. The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Water of the Canary Islands, directed by Juan Ramon Hernandez, is expected to sign this week the project was awarded to the joint venture formed by Debeocan SL and Construction and Renovation Works SL (Corpe). In this sense, "it's all resolved. The contract is not a problem, it has to go through the Governing Council and, once it is signed, will start work, "sources said yesterday the Ministry.

The works are awarded by € 1.5 million and will be executed within a period of 14 months. Thus began the beginning of the end of the ordeal suffered by the neighbors in recent years. During this time many of them have put the outcry and some have reported to court for what they considered a public health problem. Recently, entrepreneurs also were added to El Cotillo neighborhood protests at seeing the poor condition of the treatment plant and clear putrid odors that threatened the tourism image of the town and the future of their businesses.

The project has been delayed and even got to jeopardize their funding due to cuts from central government. The work is included in Annex 2 of the collaboration between the Ministry of Environment, Rural and Marine Affairs and the Ministry of Public Works and Transport of the Canary Islands, to develop actions on water in the Canary Islands , signed by both parties on December 9, 2008.

Release into Muellito. The City of La Oliva decide today whether to lift a ban on swimming in the beach of El Cotillo Muellito, preemptively closed for several days after detecting a leak of waste water from unreliable sources. The famous cove of the town is surrounded by fences that prevent access to water to avoid the danger of poisoning. The results of chemical analyzes of water will be released today and, based on them, will be allowed or not people bathe tonight during the popular celebration of the water festival. The mayor Claudina Morales clarified yesterday that the party shall not be suspended, because although tonight not allow bathing, may be held on the platform of Muellito, a water Cuba holgorio guarantee anyway.

Just back from Cotillo Sat and did not see any sign of any works starting near Cotillo.

Also do not recall noticing any sewage type smells during the 2 weeks.
